Ask many questions.. let them know of your lifestyle and how they cna be a match for you. sometimes it is good to ask them personal questions such as what they do for fun or what their lifestyle is like. this can allow you to gauge how they prioritize their work and play schedules. in the end, it is YOUR needs that have to be met, njot theirs. make sure they are a fit for YOU!!!! if you catch yourself trying to manage their lives into yours more than you to theirs, it could be a bit more challenging to adjust in the long run... AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS ALWAYS WORTH MORE THAN A POUND OF CURE!!!!
We use Craigslist. Phone interview first, then meet somewhere like a fast food place. We don't allow them in house until we hire them. I can email you a copy of the ad we use. After 20 years with a SCI you learn to manage expectations from the get go. We run background checks (try are 20 bucks). If they don't have transportation or if they ask about meds they don't make it past the interview. CPR trained, previous experience with SCI is a must. We pay 8-11/hr.
Also, it's important that the family of the SCI understand that this person will see the disabled person in very vulnerable situations so even if the applicant looks good on paper; they have to mesh personality wise as well.
